Churnin' Butter!

I have been reading some books from the Little House on the Prairie series to Eddie and it is a fun way to show Eddie that kids who grow up on a farm don't get to just play every day like he does. They have chores and responsibilities, but all the work is outside and usually involves animals, so it sounds fun anyway! Eddie has been saying he wants to be a farmer and ride horses when he grows up. I found a farm nearby that was established in the 1800's and is now opereated like a museum. They give tours and let the kids do the same farm "chores" that kids did 100 years ago. We invited some friends to come along and we all headed to the farm! When we arrived we sat down on blankets in the shade and listened to a story about a duck on the farm. Then we split into groups and started the tour. The kids got to milk a cow, plant and water some seeds, gather apples, churn butter, wash clothes and hang them to dry, see a horse, feed chickens, and gather eggs!! It was a really fun experience... except it was REALLY HOT that day.  I am talking, hot, hot, hot. Like, standing in the shade, not moving, and still pouring sweat hot. So, because of the heat, we didn't stay for the hay-ride at the end, but it was still a fun morning on the farm.

My kids listening to the tour guide. They were holding hands but let go before I could take the picture. :)

Abby was dedicated to gathering apples. After she put them all in the basket, we had to scatter them again for the next group coming and Abby was so confused wondering why would we undo all her hard work?! So cute.

Looks like a lot of fun! Too bad it was so hot. Sounds like a really neat place. Samuel also says he wants to be a farmer these days (this is a change from air traffic controller). Isaac says he will be a farm helper on Samuel's farm.

They're such a sweet little brother and sister team.

And such troopers! Oh the heat.

The blasted heat.

[Please go away, summer.]

Hey - did you churn any butter, Hot Mama?
